Adventurers, The Ray Brown Orchestra Symbolic SYS 9000, 1970
Adventurers, The album cover

Quincy Jones rescored Jobim's soundtrack to the trashy Howard Robbins film of the same name. The Ray Brown orchestra, featuring Tom Scott and Deodato on this album, lay down some great funk backing in a larger-than-life big band style. The beats are superb and almost every track is strong. It's effectively entirely instrumental, with a feel that swings between big band jazz, out-and-out funk and easy listening. Very groovy. The LP includes the heavy-breathing funk classic "Coming And Going" and the great uptempo "Polo Pony". Bjork sampled some of the beats for her first LP.

Overall Rating: 5

Track listing:

Polo Pony | Go Down Dying | El Lobo's March | Wishful Thinking | Gentle Lover | Coming And Going | Fat Cat Strut | Children's Games | Love Theme From "The Adventurers" |
