Stony Island David Matthews Glades 7516, 1978
Stony Island album cover

Ouch! One look at the band lineup on the back of the sleeve is enough to have any decent funk enthusiast reaching for the cash. James '103rd St Band' Gadson? Patrice Rushen? Andy Newmark, David Sanborn? Hiram Bullock? On a 70s soundtrack arranged by David 'Sandworms' Matthews? This has got to be a good one, right? Damn right. Almost entirely composed of wicked late 70s funk, don't miss it. There's even a killer short open drum break for the producers too. Too many good tracks to mention - a great mix of vocal and instrumental numbers, all tight, all well recorded and produced. Excellent, excellent, excellent, and totally slept-on by everyone except those in the know (which now includes you, so get down to the record store and dig it immediately!)

Overall Rating: 4
